Wisdom Quote  # 6 - The Wisdom Garden (Volume 1)

The world you and I were trained for no longer exists, the world we are living in is for those who have mastered the skill of learning, unlearning and relearning- Coach Tarie: The Wisdom Garden.

In the old times when one would acquire a college degree or a certificate in a certain course they were made to believe that they had secured a steady life and income for a lifetime. People would get a sense of false security with a monthly salary and a promise of a retirement package. Experience has shown that this is not enough. Many on retirement are struggling to enjoy a fulfilling life and many try to venture in new exploits like business and politics which they fail dismally because they were never trained for that. This explains the many politicians who refuse to retire while they continually fail to deliver because they are trying to manage a false hope of security promised by education. Security is only found in the Kingdom of God. No wonder why Hellen Keller said, "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature... Avoiding(risk) danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.”

The truth of the matter is that we are living in a time where the rate of change of things is way faster than the rate at which institutions that influence and impact people are evolving. Educational institutions are evolving in a reactionary way trying to catch up with what is happening around. People who make it are those who have learnt the truth that “Education is a private matter between the world of knowledge and experience, and has nothing to do with school or college,” as Lillian Smith put it across.

The system of formal education for life has created generations of lazy people who cannot think outside of the system and easy to manipulate. This explains the poverty, unemployment and desperation in the world. The ineffectiveness of governments, families, communities and individuals to cope with the complex world is an indicator that there is a growing demand for continuing education (lifelong learning) in order to update knowledge and skills on a regular basis. This is because of the short “shelf life” of knowledge especially acquired in the formal schooling systems that is designed with a specific outcome in mind. An outcome of exploiting human capacity for the benefit of a few.

A new kind of thinking should be informed by the above mentioned thought that education is a private affair. Take education this way and you will learn to seek relevant information and knowledge that will be able to give you the desired outcomes. Effective lifelong learning should be goal oriented and not a ritual as it has been made to be. When one does not have certain qualifications from the formal schooling system they are disqualified to participate in certain spheres but many without the specified qualifications have proven everyone wrong with the levels of success they have acquired.

Lifelong learning as in the quote under discussion is mastering the skill of learning, unlearning and relearning. The productive way of learning which takes education as a private affair should begin with a picture of a desired future, goal or end in mind. One should know what they want, that is beginning with a clear picture of an end in mind. They will then need to perform what is called ‘gap analysis’ in the business circles. This is identifying the gap between where you are and where you would want to be then make a critical analysis of how to bridge the gap. Then from there, one is to determine the kind of education required to get there and identify the quickest way to get the education as a private affair.  These kind of skills are not taught in school. One would need the skills of self-education, critical thinking, creative thinking, research, knowledge management (in a world where there is too much knowledge available) and other soft skills.
